Hairy, Furry Crossword Puzzle

What Color Is That Cat?  Dog?  Horse?

What color is the dog, cat, or horse at your house -  or at your friend’s house or in that movie you saw?  Maybe Fluffy is one single color: midnight black, marshmallow white, cocoa brown, cloud gray.  Maybe Fido is patterned with stripes, blotches, speckles.

Do you know that animal colors and patterns have names?  The names can help you picture an animal clearly in your mind and describe it to other people.  If your cat’s fur is partly black and partly orange, you can say, “My cat is a tortie.”  If you drive by some horses in a pasture, you can say, “When I grow up and get a horse, I want an appaloosa.”

Here is a crossword puzzle about cat-horse-dog colors and patterns.  You'll need to print it if you want to fill in the squares.  Many of the words may be new to you.  So you might want a search engine nearby!

Each clue says whether it’s about horses, dogs, cats, or more than one species.  Animals come in other colors and patterns besides these, but this is a pretty big list.

P.S.  Scientists say that animal fur and animal hair are chemically the same.  People just prefer using one word or the other.  What about you?  When your dog sheds on you, do you say you’re covered with fur or covered with hair?  Do you find fur or hair in your bowl of breakfast cereal?
