Fun Stuff to Do

Mushy Goo + Slime = ?

If you print this page, you can write your own opinions about worms!

In the poem "Worms," the kid says
,

"My friends say worms are mushy goo
wrapped up in slime.  Although it's true,
I like worms in my open hand.
I watch their bodies squiggle and
I feel their bodies stretch and squinch
as they move forward one whole inch."

Do you agree more with the kid or with the kid's friends?  Why?  ____________________________

_______________________________________________________________________________

Have you ever held a worm in your hand?

_______________________________________________________________________________

If so, what did the worm look like (color, size, shape)?

_______________________________________________________________________________

Did the worm move around in your hand?

_______________________________________________________________________________

How did the worm feel on your skin?

What is "mushy goo" anyway?

Mushy goo is stuff that's soft, squishy, and slightly wet.  Some mushy goo may be gross, but some is fun or useful or delicious.  Here are examples of mushy goo.  What do you think of them?  Can you fill in the blanks with more mushy goo?

spaghetti
the insides of pumpkins
mud
peanut butter
toothpaste
over-ripe bananas

And what's "slime"?

Slime is a thick, sticky liquid or gel.  It may be slippery.  It may be icky, or it may be interesting or yummy.  Usually if people call something slimy, they don't like it.  Here are some slimy things.  What do you think of them?  If you like them, can you think of a different word than slime for them?  How about "thick" or "rich" or "gooey"? (There's that goo again!)  Can you fill in the blanks with more slimy things?

hair gel
jam
mud after a rainstorm
rotten tomatoes
honey
old garbage

Have you noticed?  Mushy goo and slime are a lot alike!

The next time you see a worm in a garden or on a patio or sidewalk, pick the worm up gently.  Let it move in your hand. Then set it back down gently.  What do you think?  Icky or interesting?
